Although I can’t blame the alleged attacker for wanting to avoid direct physical contact with sexual predator.

McMillan attacked Nassar in his cell Sunday with a makeshift weapon, stabbing him multiple times in the neck, chest and back before four other inmates rushed in and pulled him off of Nassar, according to the person familiar with the matter.

Nassar is expected to survive, so he can continue to rot in prison.

Let’s talk about the obscenely fucked up way the press handles a relentless predator like Nassar.

Here’s the lede, as of 12:05 p.m., local time.

A prisoner suspected of stabbing Larry Nassar at a federal penitentiary in Florida said the disgraced former sports doctor provoked the attack by making a lewd comment while they were watching a Wimbledon tennis match on TV, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

Here’s the headline.

Suspect in Larry Nassar stabbing said ex-doctor made lewd remark watching Wimbledon, AP source says

An international outlet working the eternal news cycle has .00003 seconds to capture a reader’s attention. And that’s on a slow day. Hmm, how to get people to take time from their busy day to read an article about a prison stabbing? The answer is not assume the average reader remembers who the stabbee is and describe them with vague terms such as “ex-doctor” or “disgraced former sports doctor.”

That doesn’t tell anyone why they should care. And to be blunt, mentioning his crimes, which include sexually assaulting more than 200 girls and young women and possession of child pornography, sure as hell will get people to stop and read. If the outlet felt it was essential to mention his professional career, it would have been very easy to connect that to the reason he is in prison.

Plus, explaining why gives context to his attacker’s statement.

It isn’t until paragraph 5 that the article discretely hints at why Nassar is doing time. And indirectly, why another inmate might have said, “Time for you to shut up forever,” if Nassar mentioned girls.

Sunday’s attack was the second time Nassar has been assaulted in federal custody. He is serving decades in prison for sexually abusing athletes, including college and Olympic gymnastics stars, and possessing explicit images of children.

Look, I don’t care if the girls and young women he assaulted were NFL linebackers. When an outlet describes victims of sexual assault, some who were young as six years old, as “athletes,” and uses the term “explicit images of children” rather than “child pornography,” at least one person at that outlet has made a conscious decision to be a fucking creep. And giving people like Nassar the kid glove treatment does nothing for anyone except people like Nassar.

This article also would have been a good place to mention that Nassar was able to harm so many people because of a large number of organizations and people repeatedly ignored his victims. So naturally it veers into Concern about under-staffing at federal prisons and finishes with several paragraphs about the alleged stabber.

People who post off-topic comments are nothing more than garbage, really.
