Any baseball fan really needs to read this long appreciation of the great Peter Gammons, one of the few people in the world about whom no one ever has anything bad to say. Politically, he’s great. He’s a musician of his age and time but not a nostalgia machine like his former ESPN colleague Chris “Gasbag” Berman. And then there’s the baseball. He was the first modern reporter. For people of my age–49, christ–his Diamond Notes were must see viewing in middle and high school. No one knew more and everyone knew it. He almost died of a brain aneurysm. Then he made an unlikely but complete comeback. He’s a senior figure today, but still working and still respected by everyone. This article goes into all of that, plus amazing 70s pictures of Gammons.
