There’s a long debate about the nature of Soviet communism. Was it doomed from the start to be a horrible oppressive state? Was it Stalin? What happened? I’m reading Sheila Fitzpatrick’s Everyday Stalinism, about, well, everyday life during the 1930s. And I think I’ve settled this debate once and for all.
