JD Vance On Religion

It’s been quite a day for religion in our national discourse. The Great American State Fair apparently has a number of religiou-themed (aka home-grown fundy evangelicalism) events, which people are reporting on Bluesky. It all seems to have inspired our Vice President JD Vance, who recently wrote a book on his conversion to Catholicism called “Communion,” which features a country Methodist church on the cover.

I no longer attend church, nor can I call myself a believer, but I tend to stick with what my mother taught me – that all religions have something to offer to make us better. So i am generous to others’ beliefs until they start using them to injure people. Which has been a lot lately.

Anyhow, JD has been spouting off about religion today. Let’s see what he has to say.

All those signs bear in common with the Nicene Creed is that they begin with “We (I) believe.” As a number of historians and philosophers are pointing out on Bluesky, creedal statements are not uncommon in religion. And what makes it “hideous?” Love is love, science is science, yeah pretty yucky.

This one goes along pretty smoothly until the very end. He mentions twice that his faith admonishes him to be humble. Keep that in mind for the next one.

My best friend when I was a kid was Catholic, and I’m pretty sure that’s not how she learned it.
