The Times has a detailed visual analysis of the murder of Alex Pretti that clearly establishes that Pretti did nothing to provoke the leathal force and posed absolutely no threat at the time the first shot was fired (let alone at the time of any of the subsequent shots.)
Whether it marks a real shift in the zeitgeist I don’t know, but’s significant that the Times has chosen to cover this story clearly and impartially rather than through a “shape of the Earth, views differ” frame, and that’s been true of most of the coverage I’ve seen outside regime-aligned media.
