One reason to donate to the Last Political Blog is that we’re snappy and with-it enough to have one of those podcasts the kids are talking about these days. Some pods are relatively casual, like our NFL discussions, but we enjoy them and the numbers suggest that readers who are into that kind of thing like them to.
But we also have authors and analysts on to have serious discussions — this year, for example. Leah Litman on the Supreme Court, John Bleasdale on Terence Malick, Glenn Kenny on Brian DePalma, Ian Ona on World War II, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg on the farm crisis. And here’s the thing: we read the books. We do research. If you haven’t listened to our author interviews, I think you’ll see a level of preparation and a depth of discussion you don’t always see in the podcast format.
We explore plenty of other topics too — the incomparable Elizabeth on Dylan and the Band (a fun pod to prepare for!), Gene Hackman (ditto), the bourbon industry, David Nir on elections, etc. We enjoy it! But between the prep, the podcasts themselves, and the post-production (particularly on the lengthy pods that Farley starts with a full tumbler), it’s a time-consuming enterprise. If you’ve enjoyed the podcast at some point this year I hope you’ll consider contributing.
I mean, imagine we had less time to put these together. You could end up, with, say, somebody’s fail sister making up an imaginary group of men doing things that the late Anthony Bourdain didn’t do either because this would own the libs or something:
Jesus christ these people have the worst takes imaginable
