Prosecute the patients

This quote from a state representative in Missouri sums up the logical conclusion of claiming that a freshly fertilized human ovum is a human being, therefore destroying that freshly fertilized ovum is murder.
“To me, it’s just about protecting a baby’s life like we do every other person’s life,” state Rep. Bob Titus, a first-term Republican who is sponsoring one of the measures, told The Associated Press. “The prosecution is just a consequence of taking an innocent human life.”
Titus is referring to bills that he and Missouri state senator Mike Moon have introduced that would allow the state to prosecute women for homicide if they receive an abortion. They included a couple of exceptions, but we know those exceptions are bullshit.
At any rate, zero-tolerance policies like this have always been where the drive to criminalize possession of a womb and ovaries would lead. These people have goose stepped around screaming about baby murder for decades. They’ve become so extreme that they claim a zygote is identical to a human being that can exist outside of the womb. No one like that also thinks OK, you can kill them up to six or 15 weeks or if the ambulatory incubator will be seriously harmed. The only reason you don’t see patient prosecution laws on the books is because some of the people who push these laws want a loophole.
After all, your abortion was a senseless slaughter of an innocent babe, my abortion was a medically necessary procedure and none of your business because of HIPPA. ;-)
This isn’t the first time state legislators have introduced this type of legislation, and it won’t be the last.
Still, identical legislation was introduced earlier this year in Missouri and similar bills were introduced in 2023 in other states including Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky and South Carolina. None was advanced by a legislative committee.
Naturally, Republicans will cry foul when their opponents crassly and accurately describe their actions. Not that they’ll stop doing it, of course.
