As if to prove the point Paul made earlier today about Trump’s narcissistic 9/11 fabulism, here’s how the Times framed Trump doing it not only as late nite AI slop but what what was supposed to be a tribute to actual 9/11 heroes:

This isn’t really the case of a bad headline on a good story, either:

During the even at the Ellipse, near the White House, the president also appeared to add to his evolving account of his actions on the day of the 2001 attacks and its aftermath. He said that he was watching television the morning of the attacks and that he later took a construction crew with him to the site — a claim that has been disputed by a biographer and former police officials. Mr. Trump said that during his trip to the site, two large firefighters picked him up and took him to safety when he observed an unstable building.

This is a little better I guess — the snarky use of the the word “evolving” is presumably meant to be a signal that this isn’t entirely on the level — but still treats the question of whether Trump was rescued from a collapsing building on 9/11 as open rather than something Trump invented out of whole cloth.

I know it’s trite to ask how Biden would have been treated had he made up an elaborate lie about being a 9/11 hero to an audience of actual 9/11 heroes, but we all know the answer is that it would be a weeks-long five-alarm scandal that certainly wouldn’t have gotten a “views differ” framing, and it’s not a trivial factor in Trump winning two elections.
