I’ve decided to use this time in quarantine to do baking projects with my son. I made homemade biscuits for the first time yesterday. They were incredibly easy to make and a huge success. Son made a time-lapse video of the whole ordeal, and it was so cool.

Having now made decent pizza crust and amazing biscuits (in the food processor) I’m excited about trying to bake more stuff. Here’s what I’ve got on my “to learn” list:

  • Good, all-purpose, pie crust that can be made in the food processor
  • Muffins
  • One-layer cakes, like the French almond cake at recipe at Milk Street
  • Eventually I’d like to be able to make a fancy layer cake

In other cooking news, I’m trying a new tip from Milk Street. I forgot to buy marinara sauce at the store the other day, so I’m making my own today. Instead of peeling and chopping the garlic, I lopped the top off an entire head of garlic and plopped it in the sauce. (It’s for Roasted Eggplant Parmesan.) Before I serve, I’ll use tongs to squeeze the softened cloves into the sauce. I can’t wait to see how it works.
