Republicans: Evil, Yes, but Also too Stupid to Get in on this Grift

One thing that’s baffled me throughout the duration of this interminable Trump presidency is that not one Republican has taken the long view of this era. Assuming we make it through this, I doubt history will treat them kindly.

But if two or three Republican House and or Senate members stood up–meaningfully–against their party they’d be hailed as heroes, The Saviors of America. Or Democracy. Or Whatever.

If two or three Republicans stood up and fought on the side of the Democrats (which in these times is just shorthand for Decency) they’d be media darlings, get extremely lucrative book deals, and earn themselves a permanent place in the cable centrist punditocracy. What’s more, their actions would function as the erasure of months-long Democratic campaign to Save America, because there’s nothing the media loves more than maverick Republicans. Literally nothing.

I understand that the good of the country will never motivate Republicans, but I always thought that the good of themselves would.
