In case you missed it, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo turned into a raging lunatic when NPR reporter Mary Louise Kelly pushed him on his failure to do his basic duty and protect the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, from a cabal of criminals and goons working on behalf of the President of the United States.
Well, it would be more accurate to say that this cabal, including Rudy Giuliani, was working on behalf of their own financial interests – and that they considered Yovanovitch a threat to their scheming. In fact, when you think about it, the least damaging scenario for Trump is that he was merely manipulated into throwing the weight of the U.S. government behind their conspiracy – that, in fact, his only corrupt purpose was to coerce the Ukrainian government into undermining one of his major political rivals, Joe Biden.
Anyway, Pompeo himself is implicated in the mess, so he has no real defense of his actions other than to stonewall or go on the attack. In this sense, he’s pretty much like the rest of the Republican party, which has certainly done a lot of work to earn its place as an existential threat to the American democratic order. However, Pompeo differs from your run-of-the-mill Republican official in that he is, after the president, the highest-ranking foreign policy official in the United States and the country’s “chief diplomat.” Which just makes his press release regarding Mary Louise Kelly’s reporting that much more pathetic and offensive.
