This very good story about how officials at the DOJ urged James Comey not to violate numerous policies and procedural norms in order to make a partisan intervention into the presidential election contains this rather remarkable set of facts:

The F.B.I. offered no comment, and Justice Department officials said they had no idea what Mr. Comey saw as his next move. Justice Department officials were particularly puzzled about why Mr. Comey had alerted Congress — and by extension, the public — before agents even began reading the newly discovered emails to determine whether they contained classified information or added new facts to the case.

Law enforcement officials have begun the process to get court authority to read the emails, officials said. How soon they will get that is unclear, but there is no chance that the review will be completed before Election Day, several law enforcement officials said. Many of the emails are most likely copies of messages that the F.B.I. has already read, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.

Despite the Justice Department’s concerns, Mr. Comey felt obligated to send the letter. But it opened him up to fierce criticism not only from Democrats but also from current and former officials at the F.B.I. and the Justice Department, including Republicans.

So not only to they have no idea what’s in the emails, they don’t even have a warrant to read them yet. But Comey had to send a letter with no actual content about them knowing it would be spun as another HUGE SCANDAL involving Hillary Clinton’s DEEPLY TROUBLING EMAILS before the election was over. This is a staggering, reprehensible act of partisan bad faith. And any reporter who rushed to share Chaffetz’s spin on this should be ashamed of themselves. And if he doesn’t have the integrity to resign right after the election — and it seems like a safe bet that he won’t — Obama needs to show him the door to the wingnut lecture circuit, where his skills would be a better fit.
