One Last Thing

As part of her invaluable roundup of reactionaries making their first and last argument in favor of gay rights, World O’ Crap cuts to the heart of the issue with the title/introduction of said post:

Jenna and NotJenna Are Heterosexuals!

There, I said it! I now will undoubtedly be denounced by Mrs. Bush as “not a nice woman.” Because, as everyone knows, mentioning the sexual orientation of a politician’s child is a really despicable thing to do.

Exactly. If you believe that it would be completely out of bounds for Kerry and Bush to mention each other’s spouses, or their children’s heterosexual partners, then you are entitled to complain about Kerry. You will have a lot of complaining to do, since politicians trotting out their heterosexual family to demonstrate their bourgeois values (and praising each other’s families for a dollop of phony sentimentality) is almost a universal in political life, but I’ll take your argument seriously. Hell, I’ll even concede that I would prefer to live in your utopia than the world we actually inhabit.

If it is OK to bring up references to the heterosexuality of one’s family but not their homosexuality, however, you’re a bigot. There is no third option.
