A Quick Thought On Something That Could Happen In The Future
In the university “settlements” with Donald Trump, the universities promise, on one hand, to eliminate or minimize diversity, equity, and inclusion, and, on the other hand, to heighten awareness of and punishment for antisemitism. Not misogyny, not racism, just antisemitism.
Further, antisemitism is being defined more broadly by the administration as criticism of Israel and the Netanyahu government, or as support for Palestinians.
It’s a divide and conquer move: privilege one group and dump on others. But it’s antisemitic in its overall strategy. If enough universities cave to this formula, anger at the required inequity for some could shift toward an animus toward the apparently favored group, in this setup the Jews. The Trump administration would, in this case of course, note sadly that instead of being reduced by their humane settlements, the perverse universities are making it worse. That would also allow them to come down again on the universities.
This isn’t strictly my idea; I’ve seen it mentioned at least twice on Bluesky, although I don’t recall the authors.
One more reason that the university settlements are very bad indeed.
