Republicans are smart in cutting science funding. Because if you can cut it enough, the nation will close the institution that has longest measured carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and if you don’t measure carbon dioxide, obviously climate change can’t be happening.

  • leave no talking point unturned, brave ideology drone!

Surely you will be rewarded in Democrat Valhalla with 72 african american best buddies, and you will surely know then that you are no bigot.

    • Malaclypse

Don’t be silly. Democrats scorn the martial virtues needed to enter Valhalla. We’re more of an Eternal Pancake House crowd.

      • rea

Well, you won’t find any conservatives in Valhalla. The Valkyries get offended by their position on women in the military.

        • Warren Terra

Plus, since the repeal of Dont Ask Don’t Tell, and the realization that the dress code in Valhalla involved a lot of leather and bare chests … Well, let’s just say it’s rather like the Castro there nowadays.

          • N__B

Have you seen the way the conservatives drool over 300?

          • Malaclypse

I think it safe to say the Vikings were always In The Navy, if you know what I mean.

          • DrS

There is a cookie shop in the Castro that smells amazing. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to stop in.

    • Walt

Dude, nobody knows what the fuck you’re talking about.

      • Malaclypse

You must admit, he’ll make a hell of an LGM bingo/drinking game, though.

      • I think he’s calling Erik a… uh… “african american lover”.

  • Josh G.

“Let’s go burn down the observatory, so this’ll never happen again!”

    • N__B

Why kill the messenger when we have an oubliette handy?

  • Warren Terra
    • rm

      And don’t forget the libraries.

      • Sev

That’s pretty horrifying. One can only hope they’ll one day be held to account, unlike our war criminals; won’t undo the destruction, though.

the program requires about $1 million a year in total to keep going.

Are you kidding me? Just a million a year? Can’t we give up a drone or a new supercomputer for the NSA or something else like that to keep this going?

    • Kurzleg

Yeah, that was my reaction too. But when you’re dealing with folks who think that “waste” is the biggest culprit when it comes to the budget deficit, cutting this funding isn’t too surprising.

    • njorl

I suppose if you’re firmly committed to doing absolutely nothing about the problem, there is little point in monitoring it.

    • DrDick

A million a year would not cover NSA’s water bill.

    • Paul Klos

Or just ask the army to you know not waste so money…

Louis MacNeice had it in one at the end of Bagpipe Music:

The glass is falling hour by hour, the glass will fall for ever,
But if you break the bloody glass you won’t hold up the weather.

    • Davis X. Machina

…so it’s no-go the merry go round, then?

      (One of my favorites.)

  • Davis

It’s now consistently over 400 ppm, and that cannot stand.

    • rm

Yes it can, but we cannot.

    • giovanni da procida

It is fluctuating around 400ppm, not consistently over, and will be below 400 for the summer. I suspect that we won’t be permanently above 400 for four to five years (based on eyeballing the record).

I’ll note again that donations can be made to support the Keeling Curve here:
      http://keelingcurve.ucsd.edu/support-the-keeling-curve/

Even when science funding is not being cut (which is deplorable), time-series studies have often faced difficulties in sustaining their funding. The National Science Foundation tends to see these as monitoring programs, rather than research programs. Keeling had to fight (and refight) to keep his program going and the source of his funding changed from grant cycle to grant cycle.

      • I chipped in. I gotta say, though, that they’re way behind on this crowd-funding stuff. I want at least a coffee mug with the Curve on it.

  • Lee Rudolph

It’s well past time that the Republicans got their heads out of the sand, and up on pikes.

  • DrDick

Conservatives heard the expression “knowledge will set you free,” and it terrified them.

  • Donate to help. You can go here and hit the big red button or just do it the boring way.

    Thank you Ralph
