And Today’s Larry Summers Award For Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Sexism Goes To…

[ 33 ] February 10, 2012 | Scott Lemieux

Mr. Rick Santorum, for his assertions that women are just too hysterical to serve combat roles.

Someone should ask Santorum why he hates the IDF…

…and, actually, as his “clarification” makes clear, he’s sexist twice over. Shorter Ricky: “Men are too immature to understand that they can’t have sex with every Tempting Jezebel they might be theoretically attracted to, so in conclusion women must be denied equal rights.”

We should commend Rick for not mention the monthly infection. That shows a certain level of evolution.

  2. david mizner says:

    awesome — he’s running Pat Buchanan’s 1992 campaign.

  3. BradP says:

    Santorum/Kaufman 2012!

  4. Njorl says:

There could be problems if the enemy fields armies of exotically handsome men – especially if we incorporate bodices into women’s combat uniforms.

  5. Santorum’s spew here isn’t about women being hysterical, but about the men around them being over-protective to the point of endangering their missions.

Which is a very strong and plausible concern, because military personnel, and combat troops in particular, are just slaves to their instincts and “natural” reactions, and the military has had absolutely no success in training them to set their instincts and reflexes aside and do what they’re taught to do in stressful or dangerous situations.

    • actor212 says:

No no! He has a point! How many times have we seen a man stop shooting his .50 cal to help a woman unsheath her knife to make dinner?

    • mds says:

Well, to be fair, that is a pretty consistent attitude about the military, since holding them accountable for torturing and murdering civilians is considered beyond the pale, too. It’s almost as if they don’t actually respect those who are in military service, but consider them merely useful brutes for their own agenda.

Someone should ask Santorum why he hates the IDF…

Because they allow gays to serve openly, too. Duh.

  6. prufrock says:

My sister, who was an Air Force T.I. for ten years, would kick the frothy one’s ass without breaking a sweat.

  7. Pith Helmet says:

“it would be even more unique.”

    EVEN MOAR UNIQUE!

I’m glad we have general colonel major captain lieutenant sergeant corporal private 101 Chairborne Prick Santorum to raise concerns about front-line combat.

  8. c u n d gulag says:

Icky Sticky Ricky – ‘If we can’t trust the poor little things with making a choice about fetuses and their bodies – and we can’t, how can we trust them not to get all hot and horny in the foxholes with hetero manly-men like me?

Besides, they can’t ‘aim’ like men can. So what good would they be in combat?’

Ricky: In any war, you would have been one of the first to be fragged.
And no, that’s not some homo thing with an ‘r.’

  9. Steve LaBonne says:

Does the Flying Spaghetti Monster love us enough for Sancticmoron to actually get the nomination, and go on to lose 45 or so states? Nah, probably not, but it’s fun to think about.

    • proverbialleadballoon says:

no, but fsm loves us enough to keep mr. fecal matter in a sweater vest in the race until the bitter end. and frothy not only provides the laughs like no one else can, but acts as a big poop anchor, pulling the rest of the party down with him. fsm works in mysterious ways.

    • firefall says:

To the point of considering donating to him, just to try and make it happen, actually

  10. mingo says:

Plus, us ladeez would have to be repairing our makeup all the time, and going into tizzys about our broken nails and stuff.

  11. ema says:

In an interview with NBC’s “Today” show on Friday, Santorum clarified the remarks, noting that he’s not concerned with women being emotional — but rather that their presence on the field could impact men’s decisions in battle.

Heh, maybe Santorum wants to ban men from serving on the front lines since he thinks male soldiers are overly emotional and lack discipline.

  12. Gern Blanston says:

Shorter Ricky: “Men are too immature to understand that they can’t have sex with every Tempting Jezebel they might be theoretically attracted to, so in conclusion women must be denied equal rights.”

So by that logic, we should want more gays in combat, not less. Yet, somehow, I suspect he doesn’t see it that way.

  13. CashandCable says:

Throwing this out there: What do you think about a 14th amendment lawsuit against the Pentagon for the combat exclusion. Yeah, there’s a strong tradition of military deference, but SCOTUS has not had nice things to say about archaic stereotypes and overgeneralizations. US v. Virginia (the VMI case) seems to suggest that this stuff simply doesn’t cut it anymore.

  14. Pith Helmet says:

I’m guessing little Ricky has a hard time keeping his eyes and hands off the laideez. Dude has some serious issues.

    • Steve LaBonne says:

Judging by what we’ve seen of so many of these christian fascist creeps, I’m guessing it might actually be the boyz.

  15. actor212 says:

“Men are too immature to understand that they can’t have sex with every Tempting Jezebel they might be theoretically attracted to, so in conclusion women must be denied equal rights.”

    Oh. My. God.

    Sharia law.

  16. bobbo says:

I fear putting women in combat roles. OTOH, pregnancy caused by rape is a blessing in disguise.

  17. thebewilderness says:

Well see the women in combat have bullets in their guns so if someone tries to give them a little rape gift from God those emotional women just might blow their fucking head off, yanno?
So, as Rick can clearly see, if the men in the military can’t rape women in the military with impunity they will have to rape other men, just like they do in prison, and then the whole military will be gay or dead and what will we do about them when they come home, eh? Ricky sees the future gaying of America and it makes his gonads draw up in to his body cavity with a little shiver.

  18. cpinva says:

it’s become pretty obvious that mr. santorum possesses the reasoning capacity of a 6 year-old. the difference being that a 6 year-old is, well, 6 years old.

with that none to startling revelation, the real question becomes: why on earth is anyone paying any attention to him whatsoever?

  19. fasteddie9318 says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Ricky would make one hell of a good Muslim. The idea that women must be denied equal rights because men can’t control themselves around women is the core of Islamic notions of gender.
