This is a tweet from Lauren Boebert when she was running for Congress:

Lauren Boebert

I’m living the American dream. I came up from welfare, standing in line waiting for government cheese, to now running for Congress. Let’s keep radical socialists out of government so that people can be empowered to lift themselves out of poverty, rather than wait on government!

This tweet reflects some core right wing belief or beliefs, and I’m morbidly curious to try to figure out what they are, both in her individual case and more generally.

Possibility #1: Lauren Boebert is real stupid and doesn’t see any tension or contradiction here at all, so there’s nothing to resolve or struggle with. This by the way is why stupid people are generally happier than smart ones.

Possibility #2: Boebert is a cynical scammer who understands that this message is incoherent on its face, but she’s offering it up the way that an ad agency offers up certain incoherent and implausible messages about Coors Light to the public, because it’s profitable to do so.

Possibility #3: There’s some sort of Charles Murray crossed with Leo Strauss esoteric v. exoteric doctrine thing happening here, where she believes that government assistance may be helpful in some short term limited pragmatic way, as it apparently was to her and her family, but it would be better not to have it at all as a long term structural matter, because give a man a fish and you feed him for a day/teach him to fish he will never go hungry etc. Of course this raises the meta question of whether the Charles Murrays and their ilk are actually in category #1 or #2, and that category #3 doesn’t really exist.

Discuss.
