Week 21 – No Kings Edition

I went to the Santa Fe No Kings demonstration this morning. It was at the state capital building, affectionately called The Roundhouse, for its shape in a modified Zia symbol. My neighbors drove, and we managed to find a parking space in the rapidly filling state government lot. It was scheduled to start at 10 am, with a march to the Plaza at 10:45.

It was an older-skewing crowd, but there were plenty of young-uns too. Largely Anglo, but others too. The signs were great. I’m not sure any two were the same. The day rapidly warmed under a clear blue sky. Fortunately, the Roundhouse grounds have a lot of big cottonwood trees and shade.

It was a good-natured crowd. I didn’t see any troublemakers. I’m not good at estimating numbers, but it was many more than in the April protest. I would put it at about the same as the Women’s March in 2017.

Everything went pretty much as scheduled, although just before the march was to start, someone collapsed near the speakers’ stand. That was the first time I saw cops. Highway Patrol, and they made their way through the crowd to help. I think all told there were probably about five or six of them.

There were lots of American flags, many upside down to signal distress. I particularly liked this one, a Mexican-American mashup.

There were several Mexican flags, and one woman had a nicely-done outfit of red, green, and white. Even one Canadian flag.

Costumes too.

Lots of horn-honking from people passing by. And traffic jams (such as we have in Santa Fe) before, during, and after.

Nobody likes Trump.
