In the initial scroll, you may have noticed that his dreams of conquest are internal as well as imperialistic:
President Trump made a series of social-media posts over the holiday weekend calling for changing New Mexico’s name to “New America,” his most ambitious—and unlikely—attempt yet to remake the North American map.
Trump started late Sunday with a message that said “many people” have suggested making the name change. “So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State,” the post said. “Wow, I Love It!!!”
The message included an apparently AI-generated video in which Trump is shown in front of a New Mexico state sign sticking an “America” label over “Mexico,” then dancing to the opening bars of the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.”
On Labor Day, Trump posted more than a half-dozen images of maps in which the name of New Mexico had been replaced with “New America.”
The messages prompted a quick response from the state’s governor, Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham, who said that “New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate—it’s been ours since before the United States existed.”
The president, she said, was attempting to distract Americans from the war in Iran and rising gas prices. The governor said her state was focused on issues including healthcare and housing while “the White House wastes time coloring on maps.”
