It’s an article of faith among pundits, journalists, and internet-famous personalities that Trump holds such sway over the nation because he is–despite his myriad flaws– both funny and charming. It’s something people will casually say in both serious, journalistic settings and irony-poisoned internet discourse, and when they do it makes me feel as if I’m having a stroke.

Now, when I say this you may think I’m being hyperbolic, but I tell you I am not. When people say things like that it honestly makes me feel as if my brain is short circuiting. In fact, it’s one of those things that makes me think the world is barely real anymore, a phenomenon I touched on in my last post.

I can acknowledge that shitty people have good qualities. Perhaps they are attractive! Or funny! Or smart! Or are a snazzy dresser! Or made a piece of art I admire. I understand that we all contain multitudes. But when people contend that Trump is funny or charming, I genuinely don’t understand what they mean. They may as well be saying “You have to admit, the guy knows how to beeborp fitch ob tee stankletoob.” You just said words; I don’t know what they mean.

Can any of you explain?
