Rob referenced this yesterday but I want to reiterate how utterly disgusting it is to see New York Democrats separate themselves from the choice Democratic voters in New York City made about their mayor. Whatever you personally think about Mamdani, the one thing you have to do as a Democrat is support the democratic process by which Democrats make their choice over who they want to represent them.

If there’s one thing that ties the disparate voices on this blog together, it’s the unwavering and firm belief that party discipline is critical when it comes to general elections and flouncing away from that to vote for third parties is an absolutely unacceptable activity. I believe this as much as ever, even with the Democratic Party an endless disappointment. Liberals constantly tell leftists to shut up and vote for the Democrat so the Republican doesn’t win. They are right about that too.

But why would any leftist ever listen to a liberal again who flounced off themselves when party voters chose someone on the left? They shouldn’t! They would be right not to do so! Because this is not a one-way street. It is the most fundamental principle of politics that exists. If the centrists are just as stupid and self-centered and selfish as the dumbest leftist out there, what possible message could there be to leftists who don’t want to vote for whoever wins the Democratic nomination in 2028? It would be an impossible situation and one entirely created by centrists.

Luckily, it seems that large parts of the New York Democratic machine has moved to Mamdani. The unions such as SEIU 32BJ who went for Cuomo in the primary to protect themselves from future punishment for doing so are all-in for someone they really wanted anyway. Other local party power players are doing the same. So I don’t think that a third party run could really win here. But if Andrew Cuomo tries this, he should be driven from the Democratic Party entirely, not because of his lousy politics or atrocious character for something more fundamental–not believing that the choice of Democratic Party voters matters.
