Bill Cassidy — amazing the less pompous and self-regarding of Louisiana’s two senators — has a particular role within the Republican caucus. He claims to the party’s conscience of healthcare policy, expressing abstract support for access to healthcare and opposition for measures that would protect public health. And then he inevitably folds like a sandcastle in a hurricane and supports Republican policies to take away access to healthcare and injure public health. As Paul pointed out earlier, this happened yet again with the nomination of RFK to destroy the Department of Health and Human Services:

In a 14-13 vote along party lines, the Senate Finance Committee pushed through Kennedy’s nomination after he managed to allay concerns raised by Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La.

Cassidy, a doctor, was the one potential swing vote on the panel. Last week, he signaled that he held serious reservations over whether Kennedy was qualified to lead the vast agency, saying he was “struggling” with his decision after questioning him at two confirmation hearings. In addition to the Finance Committee, Cassidy serves as chair of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

In a statement posted on X just before Tuesday’s vote, Cassidy said he had “very intense conversations” with Kennedy and the White House over the weekend, specifically thanking Vice President JD Vance “for his honest counsel.”

Cassidy addressed the full Senate after the vote, saying he received a series of promises from Kennedy, a longtime anti-vaccine activist, including that he would maintain the Center for Disease Control’s advisory committee on immunization practices, and would not remove statements on the CDC’s website noting that vaccines don’t cause autism.

“I received assurances for Mr. Trump that we did not need to be paid in advance for renting our arena. I am assured that the check will be in the mail imminently.”

North Carolina fake-moderate Thom Tills is selling the same line of intelligence-insulting bullshit:

Tillis said he had heard concerns about Kennedy but decided “it is time to have a different kind of disruptor” overseeing HHS.

“The only way that Bobby Kennedy and I will get crosswise is if does actually take a position against the safety of proven vaccines,” Tillis aid. “That will be a problem for me.”

“What if, hypothetically, RFK Jr. starts taking the positions on vaccines he has had for many years, which were the reason he was nominated to the position? In conclusion, DISRUPTION!”

Taking Tillis out has to be the absolute #1 priority for Democrats in the 2026 midterms.
