Nazi-adjacent law professor still can’t quit Hunter Biden

George Washington University law professor and friend of the blog Jonathan Turley took a break from his celebrations of our current fascist revival to muse on the potential tax implications of the apparent fact that Hunter Biden lost a lot of paintings to the Los Angeles fires:

There is an interesting New York Post report that roughly 200 of Hunter Biden’s art pieces were destroyed in the Los Angeles wildfires.

The paintings were being stored near the home of Hunter’s lawyer and friend Kevin Morris. Morris has apparently bought eleven of Hunter’s paintings for $875,000, and reportedly also helped bail Hunter out of his extensive financial troubles in other ways.

Of course Turley can’t resist the temptation to keep obsessing over the HUNTER BIDEN INFLUENCE-PEDDLING SCANDAL, which has always lacked any evidence whatsoever that whatever influence Hunter tried to peddle resulted in anybody getting a parking ticket fixed in their favor. This is in stark contrast to the influence-peddling of the relatives of Turley’s God Emperor, which as a matter of public record has netted them billions of dollars and counting, but Both Sides dontcha know.

Turley then proceeds to make a fool of himself — I mean more than usual — by trying to play tax lawyer:

There is also the possibility of writing off the losses on taxes. There could be the ultimate irony in such a claim if it could be made.  Generally, to claim a casualty loss as deductible, there must be a federally declared disaster. On January 8, Joe Biden declared a federal disaster. If this art is covered (and I am no expert), Hunter and his allies could seek deductions for art tied to an alleged influence-peddling scandal by citing a declaration of the very person who was the subject of that influence peddling.

Hunter and his allies could find the ultimate truth in the insurance slogan “Your Safety Net in a World of Change.” Faced with a warehouse of mediocre, over-prized art with diminishing value, this could prove the best return on investment since the Bamboo Lounge went up in flames.

I’m no expert either, so I consulted one — I assume there are tax professors on GW’s faculty, but maybe they don’t like to associate with known fascists — and was told that the only tax deduction Hunter Biden could take for the destruction of his artworks would be the lesser of the fair market value or his basis in the works. The basis, since the paintings were painted by Hunter Biden rather than purchased by him, would be the value of the raw materials that he used to create the paintings, i.e., negligible.

So Turley’s clever little joke isn’t even accurate as a matter of Tax Law 101, not that anyone actually cares about such details.

But the larger point here is that right wing obsessions never go away, even when they’re centered on a pathetic and powerless figure like Hunter Biden, who, again, never managed to get his famous father to do anything, until he pardoned his son for committing crimes that are never prosecuted unless you’re a right wing hate object.

Speaking of pathetic, Hunter is a long-term drug addict who suffered a horrific trauma as a young child when his mother and baby sister were killed in the same traffic accident that severely injured him. I wonder what Turley’s excuse is?
