LGM Film Club, Part 430: Zyedco
I recently watched Nicholas Spitzer’s 1984 film Zydeco, an hour long documentary about the zydeco scene in southwestern Louisiana, with lots of great material. People such as Bois Sec Ardoin are prominently featured, as are people I’ve never heard of. Spitzer also does a great job exploring how the scene had changed over the years, with younger audiences preferring zydeco mixed with the R&B scene from the 60s. It’s just a real fun documentary of a music scene at a given time.
Now, this was on Criterion. But in messing around looking for information about it, I found this site called Folkstreams that has all sorts of old American folklife films. So yeah, I’ll be checking this out a lot! The Les Blank site also has it. I don’t see any obvious evidence that Blank was involved with this, but it is very much up his alley.
