The winding makeshift border wall made from shipping containers runs through several miles of national forest along the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona.Credit…Ivan Pierre Aguirre for The New York Times

Arizona’s former governor, Doug Ducey, decided to do his own border performance art, although he lacked the inhumanity of the governors of Texas and Florida, and stuck with shipping containers. He was building a border wall of them, illegally, which of course stopped nothing. The good thing about it was that it was relatively porous to wildlife.

The Biden administration brought a lawsuit against the wall and won. Demonstrators, including Russ McSpadden, whose tweets are below, also interfered with attempted construction. The wall is now being disassembled.

I hate seeing those bulldozed areas. I look at the tiny cactuses and grasses in my yard and think how many of them died for this man’s bigotry. But they have been more resilient in my backyard than I expected, so I hope the same for Arizona.
