It may in fact be correct that the doom and despair caused by climate change is counterproductive. But one of the reasons that it’s hard to overcome this is that there are a zillion other enormous environmental problems on top of that that we aren’t even close to addressing. One of them is habitat loss. This Times graphic about the incredibly rapid decline of habitat for key species, especially in the tropics, is beyond sobering. It is horrifying, depressing, and outrageous. It also can be stopped to some extent through international cooperation, but then that gets back to the larger point that the big wealthy nations don’t really care, just like they don’t really care about climate change. So the issues all get wound up with each other and it just wears you down with sadness.
