It’s just a shot away

We can expect a lot more of these sorts of incidents, in the wake of Donald Trump’s latest attempt to burnish his credentials for the Nobel Peace Prize:
An armed man who rammed his vehicle into a Detroit-area synagogue on Thursday was fatally shot by security, police say.
The incident occurred at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Mich., about 27 miles northwest of Detroit.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters that the suspect, who was not identified, “breached the building” in a vehicle and drove down a hallway before being engaged by temple security.
One security guard was struck by the suspect’s vehicle and was taken to the hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities launched a large-scale emergency response after a shooting and smoke were reported at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The incident follows rising safety concerns due to recent acts of violence targeting public spaces in the U.S. and Canada.
Helicopter footage from local TV news stations showed what appeared to be smoke coming through the roof of the building. In addition to being a place of worship, the temple also has an on-site early childhood education center, according to its website.
None of the children or staff were hurt, Bouchard said.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released a statement saying her administration was monitoring the situation and expressing her concern for those involved.
“This is heartbreaking. Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace,” she wrote. “Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan. I am hoping for everyone’s safety.”
I remember how disconcerting it was when I took my daughter to the Jewish Community Center in Boulder a few years ago for an extra-curricular activity, and encountered armed security guards at the door.
You don’t have to be a paranoid conspiracist to suspect that the Trump administration’s more unhinged zealots are eagerly trying to inspire a mini-9/11 or two, as an excuse for the clampdown, especially in regard to midterm elections that every piece of available evidence suggests they will lose in a landslide if they are actually held.
