Late night East Coast fantasy hot take

I’ve just seen some stills from The Thrones of the Dragons or whatever.

My first thought: The fantasy genre would be vastly improved if everyone who still thinks fantasy = pseudo-medievalish Europe with splashes of pre-Raphelitism received six sharp kicks in the pants and was forced to pick up garbage in the snow.

It’s fantasy for Baba Yaga’s sake. Fantasy is ancient Greek for “Made up shit that has magic and possibly mythical humanoids in it.”

Maybe I made that up. But in the year 2022, everyone should be bored to tears by anything inspired by Thomas Malory, who – were he to return from the dead – would likely be pissed when he discovered how many people have gotten rich by regurgitating his work.

Besides which, putting a cast in ghillie suits and dyeing their hair different pastel colors would absolutely draw some amusing shrieks from dillholes who will read books full of mythical creatures, mages, and warriors who can fight off a legion of orcs with a butter knife, but at the first mention a woman soldier or a character who doesn’t code as white, start yammering about the lack of verisimilitude.
