Yesterday I had the opportunity to sit down with Matthew Gabriele, co-author of the Bright Ages: A New History of Medieval Europe. Matt and I spoke about the essential “weirdness” of the Middle Ages, the current state of the “continuity vs. sharp break” conversation and where the Bright Ages falls on that dichotomy, the long shadow of Edward Gibbon, and the enduring presence of medieval themes in modern pop culture.
