Since this is a milestone post in the Film Club, let’s focus on a great film. I love the classic period of Wong Kar-Wai, who has a strong claim to be the best director working in the 1990s. Granted, My Blueberry Nights was a complete disaster and since then I haven’t seen any of what seems to be considered minor work, but between As Tears Go By in 1988 and 2046 in 2004, it was just gold. This story of a low-level Hong Kong gangster and the women he mistreats is all atmosphere, all the way. But then that’s how Wong rolled at his best. No one could do atmosphere better during these years. The camera work is also outstanding through this run of films. It’s a real favorite. Wong hasn’t even made a film in 8 years now, so he may be finished. If so, he’s still one of the all-time great directors.
