I hate making primary endorsements (vote for who you want, as long as it’s not Tulsi), but I feel compelled to highlight the good work that has been done on foreign policy in Bernie’s campaign, which effectively constitutes an endorsement. In particular, I want highlight this nice Foreign Policy has article on long time friend-of-the-blog Matt Duss, and the role that he has played in helping to formulate the campaign aspects of Bernie’s foreign policy this year. Matt has taken a very unusual path to influence, and it’s worth examining that path for what it says about the DC foreign policy blob in general, and Bernie’s approach to foreign policy specifically. With respect to the campaign in particular, I think that Bernie has done more to stake out a genuinely different approach to foreign policy than any of the other candidates, and that this approach can meet core US national security and national interest obligations while avoiding much of the nonsense that has produced multiple extended conflicts around the world. Of course, there is still much work to do.
