And the Oscar (for Best Gown) Goes To…
By This was an odd year for Oscar fashion. Few gowns really impressed. Many actors seemed to be playing it safe, and safe veered well into boring. Those who didn’t play it safe often wore gowns that looked as if they were collaborations between two designers who have a deep and abiding grudge against each other. Still other gowns had some lovely elements that ruined by other elements–there was a kernel of a great idea and then it all fell apart in the end. Most puzzling were the gowns that looked like pageant contestant fare. Darlings, these are THE OSCARS.
Still, there were a few that were lovely. I’m (mostly) focusing on those.
The Oscar for Best Color goes to Mindy Kaling. If you’re going to go safe and conservative, please, please do it like this–with a charming, perfectly-fitting gown in a gorgeous color like this bright but not blinding warm yellow. Pure class.
The Oscar for Inspiring Most Conflicting Feelings goes to this dress on an person I’ve never heard of. The color is stunning–a sort of muted bronzy-gold and I love the mix of textures. I just feel like the tailoring is…nonexistent? It’s ill-fitting. If it were properly-tailored, it’d be a stunner.
The Oscar for Making Tea-Length Gowns Look Fresh and Beautiful goes to Florence Pugh. This high-low hem combined with the not-overdone ruffles and this rich, fresh green makes this one of my favorite looks of the night.
The Oscar for Most Stunning Bodice goes to Scarlett Johansson.
The Oscar for Prettiest in Pink goes to Regina King. I mean…*gestures*…
The Oscar for Veering Most into Costume Territory but Still Making it Work goes to Janelle Monae in this vision in silver.
The Oscar for Doing the Best to Evoke Sea Life from Before the Permian Extinction goes to Kristin Wiig.
