There’s probably a number of reasons why Kirsten Gillibrand’s campaign never took off. But the primary reason is the worst possible reason–rich old while Democratic funders held her personally responsible for Al Franken being racked and executed Spanish Inquisition style. Never mind that Franken resigned on his own. Never mind that Franken in the Senate during the Kavanaugh hearings would have been an absolute disaster for Democrats. It’s quite clear that a lot of donors were VERY EXCITED about Franken running against Trump in 20 and they found someone to blame for that not happening. I mean, sure she only said he should resign five minutes before 10 other senators. And sure, his own behavior is what is to blame here. But he was a GOOD MAN THAT WE LIKED! And THAT BITCH GILLIBRAND destroyed him because something something something.

Honestly, this whole deal is tremendously gross and any history of misogyny in modern politics will be dealing with this whole incident and what it says about the Democratic Party elites in the late 2010s.
