Hey all,

There are plenty of rumors floating around regarding SEK’s status.  While everyone probably has a sense of where things are going, we will refrain from posting anything here until we receive definite information.  Please do your best to avoid speculation until we have reliable news.

See also the GoFundMe, which will remain relevant under any eventuality.

I actually didn’t know there were any rumors. Jokey Simpsons reference edited out just in case this is serious.

    • NBarnes

      It’s serious.

  • cpinva

I hadn’t even realized SEK was ill. When did that happen, or was it out of the blue?

    • (((Hogan)))
      • cpinva

sorry, I missed it. my wife has been in the hospital since the 8th, so I’ve been dealing with that. I am so sorry to hear about this, and I hope for some improvement.

        • GeorgeBurnsWasRight

And sorry for what your wife and you have been going through.

  • karen marie

Not really my place to complain but I’ve been distressed by the lack of frontpaging of the gofundme. It has a ways to go.

    • Robert Farley

      • El Tigre Sabroso

Does this mean that certain Twitter posts which I can no longer find are inaccurate? I sure hope so.

        • Depends which Twitter posts you’re talking about. Hope may not be your friend.

  • Gregor Sansa

Fuck 2016. The mere fact that a post like this is necessary.

    • xaaronx

This. I was tired of all the complaining about how this year is so terrible, but the past two weeks have been like getting hit by a freight train on both the micro and macro levels. I give in. 2016 can suck it.

  • LeeEsq

2016 has turned out to be a brutal year for too many people. Thanks to the Electoral College or a few tens of thousands of strategically placed greedy and violent people, 2017 looks like it will be worse.

    • I worry it’ll be a long, long time before we see a good year again. :(

      • LeeEsq

How do you say horrible era in Latin?

        • Ramon A. Clef

          Anno Domini?

          • Mac the Knife

            + 2016

        • petesh

anni horribiles would be the plural of “horrible year,” as popularized by Her Maj. I’m not sure what the best translation of “era” in your sense would be, but tempora horribiles would probably do it.

          • I’m not sure what the best translation of “era” in your sense would be

            Maybe epochae?

            • Linnaeus

              I might suggest saeculum.

              • petesh

Both epocha and saeculum seem a bit long for what I was thinking of as an era, which is less than a full lifetime and in this case could be a mere decade or so. Hence my thought of “these times.” Am I too starry-eyed an optimist? Which is probably another way of asking, will I ever see the end of this?

                • (((Hogan)))

I don’t know, it really feels like a saeculum, if not saecula saeculorum.

          • JonH

This year goes beyond that, to anus horribilis.

        • ThrottleJockey

          FUCK US.

          • petesh

This, however, is having been already done.

      • socraticsilence

On election night and the day after, following calls to my regionals and their field organizers I just kept hearing the Edward Grey quote over and over.

    • Gregor Sansa

Not just people. 2016 is the worst by far.

      • sibusisodan

Yeah. That’s another one on the pile of ‘so scary I don’t want to think about it.’

    • TroubleMaker13

      Now it’s Winter in America.

      • Gregor Sansa

My link just above: winter is never coming.

        • Origami Isopod

Not exactly. Global climate change means extreme weather of various kinds, including bigger, more-powerful blizzards.

  • c u n d gulag

Add the horror of SEK’s condition on top of the horrible storms-storms that have hit us this year, and realize that we’re not even into December yet.

I’m not a praying man, but my thoughts are with SEK, and his friend and family.

    • Nobdy

On the plus side, your username is more relevant than it has ever been!!

  • Calming Influence

I refuse to be anything but hopeful, and I insist anyone reading this be hopeful as well.

    • Rob in CT

Well, that’s in keeping with your nym, if not the way the year has gone…

    • Tyto

There recently seemed to be some reason for hope, and I’m holding onto that for now.

    • rea

I am hopeful–there are any number of giant asteroids out there.

  • MPAVictoria

Shit. Trying to send out positive vibes.

  • brad

So much fucking lost this year. And it’s not done taking. This will be a vicious holiday season, I fear. Just for me alone, my cat will not make it to see the inaugural. Not that I blame him for wanting out before then.
I want to joke about being sent back to 1999 to kill David Broder and/or Michael Weiner, but it’s just not funny.

    • Diabolical_Engineer

I can sympathize with the cat. It’s looking increasingly likely that we’ll have to put our foster dog down this week. It seems that he was too far gone to be rehabilitated when we got him. I’m torn to pieces about it, but it isn’t fair to him to drag this out.

      • Hercules Mulligan

Both my cats went this year as well. They probably would have even absent the horrible events, but, well, one went the day after Election Day. So.

        • Bruce B.

Oh man. So sorry to hear. There’s no good time to lose a pet, but if there were, this surely wouldn’t be it. Condolences to y’all. :(

        • kateislate

We lost the family pet on Friday. Feels like the joy in my life has been cut right out.

Doesn’t feel fair to feel sad in the grand scheme of things going wrong this year, but seems harder to deal with the last cuddle-refuges gone.

    • brad

I mean Anthony Weiner, derp. His failures helped elevate Breitbart, and gave Comey his chance. Quite the legacy that asshole’s horniness has left.

    • Origami Isopod

I lost my beloved cat earlier this year too. Sympathies to everyone else who lost a pet.

    • swaninabox

My sympathies. Having to put down the dog managed to be the second saddest part of election week.

It would have been first but it was at least anticipated.

2016 can end any time now.

  • Sorry to hear that.

I had to step away from the blogs for a while to regain my equilibrium.

    • So did I.

Hadley Freeman’s column from a few days ago (which I just got to today; I also have stepped away from newspapers, mostly) describes me pretty well (but more jokeyly—though not very jokey, at that—than I can yet bring myself to be).

  • gogiggs

I have no sense at all of where this is going and no idea to what this post refers

But, I know we’re all going to die, but NOT FUCKING NOW!

    Get well Scott!

  • vic rattlehead

I hope SEK gets better. Sending you good vibes and thoughts.

I know there’s never a *good* time to die, really, but aside from being so young, what a rotten week. I feel terrible that people have to go in the immediate aftermath of this awful election. No one deserves that. If it were someone close to me I’d be tempted to lie and tell them Clinton won and insulate them from the news.

  • PJ

Rooting for Scott and for the Management.

  • NickFlynn

I’ve never been more than a very occasional commenter here but I am a long-time voracious follower of the site, so – despite being completely unknown to you folks – you’ve meant a great deal to me. Hoping for a miracle here and my thoughts are with you.

  • The Lorax

Sending out prayers and good thoughts for SEK and those who love him.

  • His brother just announced on Facebook that Scott passed away this morning.

    • Ruviana

As people are likely finding out, that page is crashing.

    • stinapag

This makes me profoundly sad. I’ve been pulling for him since his post on Thursday, and I’ve been thinking about how amazing it is that someone I’ve never met in person could have this sort of effect on me.

      • Ruviana

I know, I am crushed and haven’t felt like this since, I dunno, November 9th.

        Fly Batman fly.

    • (((Malaclypse)))

The world is a smaller place with his loss.

    • MAJeff

I only knew him through posts. May those who knew and loved him retain many happy memories of the man.

    • brad

    • XTPD

This is terrible news, and best wishes go out to his family and loved ones.

    • swaninabox

      That is just miserably sad.

  • solitarykitsch

Awful news. Love & light to his family, friends, and readers.

  • Alan G Kaufman

I will miss him and I never knew him but through his work.

  • Arla

This is so, so awful. I’m so sorry to hear this. RIP SEK. We’ll miss you terribly.

  • Ramon A. Clef

Damn it. Like others, I knew him only from his work, yet his passing still stings.

  • Keaaukane

I only knew him through his posts, and yet I feel like I lost an old friend. I wish you a good death voyage, my friend I never met. I will lift a glass to your memory.

  • NickFlynn

Condolences to all who knew and loved him.
