Very sorry to hear the news, although we have been waiting for it for weeks. Aside from following on facebook and trading comments here or there, I never really made human contact with him, but consider SEK a friend whose thoughts I always looked forward to reading. A really good man, taken from us far too soon. Godspeed, Scott.

  • cpinva

so sorry to hear of this, my deepest condolences to his family and friends. his voice, and his cats, will be missed. I never had the opportunity to meet him in person, but anyone who likes cats is automatically a good guy, as he was.

  • sibusisodan

So very sorry to hear this. Adding my condolences too.

  • Breadbaker

I hope his initials will forever remain on the masthead. His was a voice and a humor we will miss, especially as the next four years unfold. Scotty, we hardly knew ye.

  • An utterly profound loss.

I hope LGM will put up a “best of…” (Or perhaps a “starter’s guide” since the best of might just be everything he wrote) post. Mirroring acephelus would be good too.

    Horribly sad.

  • Alan G Kaufman

He cometh before the swarthy Lord, seated at his bar, and pensively he does his whiskey sip, and state his case like thus: I submit to you that though I may have fucked my life up flatter than hammered Shit, I stand here before you beholden to no human cocksucker.

So taught SEK, who never was dead wood a day on earth.

    • benjoya

well said. rest in peace, scott.

    • Halloween Jack

  • FirstDano

    RIP SEK.

    We will miss you.

  • I have not been here long enough to read a lot of SEK’s posts, but I know he will be missed. Sad end to a sad year.

    Fuck 2016.

  • Mark Jeffery

I’m sorry, I’m not really hating the 2016 death thing. Leonard was old; Bowie, Lemmy and Rickman were at vulnerable ages.

However: I’m not clever enough to say anything genuinely moving, or to adequately express my feelings but, this stupid fucking SEK thing has made me cry more than once. He wrote funny shit about cats and students. He wrote insightful things about TV and movies. He wrote incisive stuff about politics. I’d like to think that we might have shared a drink if we’d been stuck somewhere together.

Fuck off world, I’ve always known your nature is that of random viciousness, but this one hurts more than most.

  • Thom

SEK was brilliant, and made me laugh every time.

    • LosGatosCA

Yes. He will be missed. His rare wit and creativity were more than worthy of the admiration and appreciation shown here and elsewhere. RIP, SEK.

  • witlesschum

That guy in his old neighborhood who thought SEK was in a gang because of his questionable hat wearing can feel safer, but this sucks for everyone else. He just always seemed like a good dude. No better thing to say about someone’s online persona than that, in my opinion.

    Rest in peace, goddamned Batman.

    • ThrottleJockey

His neighbor posts were my favorite. Kept me in stitches. He might have left this earthly plane, but his words and laughter are eternally etched on the internet. Condolences to all his loved ones.

  • N__B

I can’t find any words. The guy with all the explanations of the ridiculous world is gone.

  • So sorry. This was terrible news. Scott was much too young.

  • (((Malaclypse)))

One of his friends set up a yahoo email to send Scott well-wishes a few weeks back. Last night, of all nights, the family wrote back, I can only assume to hundreds of people, thanking us for the thoughts and telling us if his passing.

A family of mensches. May his memory always be a blessing to them.

    • I have a draft email that I was going to send to that address the other week that I never finished.

He was one of a kind. I always smiled when I saw his byline. What a grievous loss this is.

  • Heron

    God Fucking Dammit.

SEK was a smart and funny guy. I want to thank him for living and making the world a better and more interesting place. I want to thank his family for sharing him with us; you guys did raised a good egg. He made life more bearable and less confusing, which are things we should all aspire to do. The life he got wasn’t the life he deserved, but he made a damn fine go of it, and took adversity and disappointment with endurance and an infectiously wry-spirited sangfroid that helped us all to hold ourselves up. His composure, his insight, his art; these were the very definition of admirable. I didn’t know him apart from his writing but I’ll miss him, and I ain’t the only one, and that says some mighty wonderful things about his character. Adios, funnyman.

  • InnerPartisan

    Fuck :(
I’m a longtime lurker, and just came here to give my condolences. SEK was an incredibly funny&smart guy. I especially loved his Internet Film School columns. I hope his family is holding up.

  • MelissaM

While I enjoyed his paid writing, I will miss more the life-as-it-happened-to-SEK more. Who could get accused of sexual harassment by finding a couple in flagrante delicto in his own office??

    • ThrottleJockey

OMG I had forgotten about that story. That was hilarious.

  • cackalacka

    Rest in peace, SEK.

  • Adam The K

One of the widest-ranging bloggers I ever read. I learned about the history of social Darwinism, visual rhetoric, cat psychology, the literal intersection of education and sexuality, the latest right-wing outrage at Raw Story, and an epic series of hilarious one-act plays with a witty, befuddled Everyscott at the center.

You will be greatly missed, SEK.

  • Mike Lommler

    Fuck 2016.

    Will miss you, SEK.

  • Halloween Jack

    Ave atque vale, Scott.

  • q-tip

A great writer, a mensch, and possibly The Real Most Interesting Man in the World. Rest In Peace, SEK – you done good.

(I see comments from newer readers who may have missed many of SEK’s greatest hits – his acephalous blog is worth a deep dive.)

    • q-tip

One or two examples from the UC Irvine years.

  • SIS1

My condolences to his family, friends, and the community he enriched.

  • West

Terribly sad news. My deepest condolences to all who were close to him.

In all his work, from humble subjects all the way up to his weightiest subjects, he struck me as a true writer and a writer of truth.

  • bob333

So very sorry to hear this news. My condolences to the family for their loss. Again sorry to hear this news.

  • Katya

I have nothing original to add (unlike SEK, whose voice was always original), but my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

  • enemyAI

Scott was an entertaining, brilliant, and above all, immensely human writer. I think some of his greatness stemmed from the way he shared his vulnerabilities with his readers, usually with humor, always with honesty. And some of it stemmed from the fact that he was just so freaking intelligent. I learned a lot from Scott, and although I did not know him, I will miss his writing and his presence greatly. I suspect there are many like me.

My condolences go out to his family and his friends.

  • Never met him, felt like I had, figured I would some day. Dammit.

  • The Lorax

My condolences to all who loved him.

  • SatanicPanic

Nothing to add. This sucks. RIP.

  • JKTH

    Goddamn. RIP SEK.

  • Rob in CT

    Well, shit.

  • Sebastian_h

    Ugh. That is horrible.

  • muddy

I’ve been trying since yesterday to say something meaningful, and just feel at a loss. What can one say to the loss of someone so warm, and talented, and smart – and so young. My heart is breaking for his family.

    • Anna in PDX

You are speaking for me. I’ve been struggling to find words for two days.

  • proportionwheel

Although I never met him or even interacted with him online, I feel his loss like that of a good friend. There’s nothing I can say that adds anything to what has been said by so many in this thread and elsewhere, but I hope there can be some comfort to his family and real-life friends that he gave so many of us so much to think about and so many good laughs. RIP.

  • Gone2Ground

Longtime reader/lurker for this site, which I think kept me as sane as possible during the election – especially when so many other go-to sites went right off the rails.

SEK made me laugh out loud with his cat and neighbor stories. I was so looking forward to his take on the Current State of Affairs.

    He will be sorely missed.

To SEK’s family and friends: My heart goes out to you, suffering through such a premature and terrible loss.

To 2016: “Thou detestable maw, thou womb of death.”

  • whetstone

I don’t know what to say except that I am so so sorry for his family and all of you here. On Twitter yesterday I saw people who only knew him through the internet–including one of my favorite writers, who credits SEK for getting him to write in the first place–mourning him and the role he’d played in their lives. I was tremendously moved by the reach of his work. RIP.

  • drpuck

My sympathies are extended to family and friends and the LGM tribe. Hope for justice and peace.

His work and ideas remain active.

  • njorl

He will be missed. He will be remembered.

    • pennagardener

  • Woodrowfan

I am so very sorry. My condolences as a faithful fan of his writings to his family and friends….

  • ThrottleJockey

RIP SEK. You will be sorely missed by legions of fans.

    Au Revoir.

  • Nathan Goldwag

    Well, fuck.

    Ave atque vale

  • jamesepowell

Goodbye SEK. You were the right kind of crazy. Because of you, whenever I watch Game of Thrones I imagine the eye lasers.

  • CaptainBringdown

Deepest condolences to the Kaufman family and to SEK’s friends and loved ones. His loss will be felt most deeply by those who knew him personally, but I think I speak for most if not all LGM’ers when I say this loss is devastating to me and the rest of us in this little corner of the internet.

Let us keep up the good fight together in his memory.

  • Jewish Steel

This is saddening news indeed. I’m so sorry.

  • Simple Mind

Un décès trop tôt, un homme trop jeune. [tears] Will miss SEK. And we need him so badly right now.

  • synykyl

My condolences to his family and friends. I will miss his posts here. Who is going to take care of his cats?

  • MyNameIsDoug

I’ve lurked for years on this blog. I registered to comment so that I can say that I will deeply miss SEK. He seemed a kind and decent person, and I learned so much from him. I am so sad that he is gone. My deepest condolences to all of his friends and family.

  • My condolences to his friends and family, to the oldmen cats, and to this community. From another long time reader, mostly lurker.

  • How terrible. RIP. I only read this just now, but I am gutted. I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to his family his coworkers and his friends and to everyone who eagerly read his work.
