Home / General / The ESPYs

So the ESPYs are super dumb and self-serving. Unless Norm Macdonald is the host. If you’ve never watched his monologue from when he hosted in 1998, you really should do so. Not only do you get reminded of sports scandals of the past–Anthony Mason!–but there’s the general feeling of discomfort that Macdonald delivers. And of course a OJ joke.

Award shows suck in general. The ESPYs? Suck even worse.

The Hideki Arabu bit was dumb, but everything else hit pretty good. This has got to be one of those cases where the people in charge had no idea who Norm MacDonald actually was.

Never understood why Mike Espy deserved to have an awards show named after him.

Is Christian Ponder a better host than QB? Or is he hiding behind his wife?

The OJ joke was actually really funny. And I never thought I’d write that sentence.

    • Dirk Gently

I was just thinking the same thing.

    • Macdonald really was the king of the OJ jokes.

Jaime Foxx, while not as great as I remember thinking at the time, got in some good shots at Barry Bonds among others in 2003: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX92HN5XEmk

. . . general feeling of discomfort that Macdonald delivers.

Well put. Loved him as the news anchor on SNL. As the show was transitioning to greater mass audience appeal he didn’t shy from the ‘is it okay to laugh at that’ joke.

Sort of surprising that he even gets a job like this where making people a bit uncomfortable isn’t exactly the goal. People already must be uncomfortable knowing the whole idea of ESPYs is overblown and ridiculous to begin with, they probably needed a more Rah Rah type. But, hey, more power to him, the guy is funny. Will be checking out a highlight reel (if it exists) soon.

I still miss him as anchor of Weekend Update. He was the last time they basically just gave it over to a Comedian and told him to make it his own. After the disaster that was Colin Quinn, it’s just been warmed over Leno monologue humor delivered behind a desk, and it shows.

Whoa…all this time I’ve been wondering why Norm McDonald is no longer funny. Turns out I’ve been watching Adam Carolla instead.

    • TribalistMeathead

That’s not really an answer to the question “Why isn’t Norm MacDonald funny?”

  • Snuff curry

I really, really want to like MacDonald, he’s amazingly intelligent (when compared to his schtick) but fuck if he isn’t a card-carrying member of the “misogyny is a myth / saying somebody is sexist makes you the real sexist” and “women aren’t funny” he-man woman-haters club.
