Oh, He’ll Find More

[ 4 ] December 2, 2010 |

Fred Kaplan is certainly right that McCain’s current excuses for flip-flopping on DADT have been exposed as the utter fraud they’ve obviously always been.    As to whether he’s run out of excuses, definitely not.   He never will.   For this great maverick, self-serving bullshit has always been an inexhaustible resource.

I’m still waiting for Godot the staunch champion of gay and lesbian rights that we “literalists” can’t see in McCain to emerge.

Back in ’01, McCain gave a beautiful and moving eulogy for Mark Bingham, a gay man who gave his life for his country in 9/11.

I wish he hadn’t gone too senile to remember the speach–it was a pretty good one.

“I love my country, and I take pride in serving her. But I cannot say that I love her more or as well as Mark Bingham did, or the other heroes on United Flight 93 who gave their lives to prevent our enemies from inflicting an even greater injury on our country. It has been my fate to witness great courage and sacrifice for America’s sake, but none greater than the selfless sacrifice of Mark Bingham and those good men who grasped the gravity of the moment, understood the threat, and decided to fight back at the cost of their lives. * * *

“I may very well owe my life to Mark and the others who summoned the enormous courage and love necessary to deny those depraved, hateful men their terrible triumph. Such a debt you incur for life. * * *

“I will try very hard, very hard, to discharge my public duties in a manner that honors their memory.

“I never knew Mark Bingham. But I wish I had. I know he was a good son and friend, a good rugby player, a good American, and an extraordinary human being. He supported me, and his support now ranks among the greatest honors of my life. I wish I had known before September 11th just how great an honor his trust in me was. I wish I could have thanked him for it more profusely than time and circumstances allowed. But I know it now. And I thank him with the only means I possess, by being as good an American as he was.”

What a sorry evil old man McCain is!

Shorter John McCain: “No matter what the pentagon says, the men and women of the U.S. armed forces simply are not as professional as those of Serbia and Uruguay.”

Back before the 2000 election, I was doing some reading about the various candidates, and I ran across the mostly-ignored factoid that McCain’s voting record had a 100% approval rating from the Family Research Council and the Christian Coalition. There’s nothing like letting your enemies do your work for you; from that point on I could safely ignore anything that came out of McCain’s mouth, because it was certain to be self-serving horseshit.

This is what McCain always was. The mask has just slipped.
