It Was Megan McArdle with the Time Machine in the Koch Brothers’ Ballroom
Some folks say Obama is capable of some pretty impressive chicanery, including traveling back in time to botch hurricane responses. But everyone who’s paying attention knows that’s ludicrous, because there’s only one time machine and Megan McArdle’s got it. And what did she do with it? Go back 6000 years to see Jesus riding a dinosaur? Did she travel back to some asshole dinner party in the 50’s to ask Ayn Rand if she could tenderly caress her cheek? No. She went to 1995 so she could warn us all that–IN THE FUTURE–news outlets might become more ideological. Freaky, right?
OK, the linked article is really kinda boring and “DUR.” But stay with me. The comments…are sublime. Let me share my favorites with you:
Bush was a liberal by his actions. His speech was often conservative, but seldom were his actions. Remember how easily he gave up his effort to privatize Social Security? With only a little push back from the left he was over it, while his extended educational and prescription drug initiatives were popular with the left at the time.
Megan McArdle is practically the only person in the media who is willing to even admit the possibility that there is leftist bias in the media, obvious though it is. She’s one of the few journalists with integrity.
Keep in mind that the projections of Dem victories based on demographic change are likely ephemeral. Just look at the history of voting among ethnic Irish, Poles, Italians or any one of the other European ethnicities in big cities from a hundred years ago. Or… black for that matter, having migrated from predominantly Republican a hundred years ago to 90% Dem today. In truth, Dems have a big advantage with immigrant populations that identify more with their ethnicity or tribe as opposed to seeing themselves as Americans, first and foremost. The good news for we Repubs is that in most cases this tribal identity tends to lessen with succeeding generations, intermarriage, etc. Only if government takes steps to enforce ethnic or racial self-identification, as with Jim Crow or Big City machine politics, government school propagandizing, can the party of coalitions hope to avoid sinking beneath the waves.
I’m sure Google, I mean Eric Schmidt and his volunteers from Google, are working on solving this problem as we speak. They are finding ways to get lethargy lefty voters up off their couches and into the voting booths…perhaps a Buzzfeed article about EBT being eliminated? Maybe a story about how racists Ted Cruz is because he’s insulting Canada by trying to figure out how to drop a citizenship he never really thought about since he left at age 4? Who knows.
The media unabashedly promotes only one side (the liberal, marxist, socialist one) to the American public. They ignore, hide, or squelch any opposing story that does not promote their way of thinking. Anybody who reads Drudge Report knows this from day one.
Keta, the modern libera: laughing away as our once great country loses it’s freedoms, it’s people go into the poor house, and its economy is destroyed forever. But hey, at least we legalized murdering babies and legitimized sodomy! Now that is progress! (sarc)
Huh? The MSM has been blatantly, explicitly, unashamedly partisan since at least 2004 when Dan Rather’s “Fake but accurate” fabricated documents attempted to swing a presidential election. Frankly, I consider myself lucky when all they do is selectively cover news that fits the bias and shade the facts instead of baldly fabricating events.
Does anyone honestly think that any reporter (besides science columnists, food writers, and sports columnists) is anything but a partisan hack? I’d love to include business writers in this, but Friedman kind of taints all of you.
Interesting view, but some broad assumptions are being made about Demographics.
To me, it seems that Democrats are taking minority and women votes for granted. I say this from some of the social stances that Democrats are fully endorsing now under Obama as opposed to paying lip service to what are traditionally vocal, but small voting blocks.
Homophobia is just as prevelant in the black community IMO as it is elsewhere. Will as non-black candidate garner 95+% of the black vote or will it be just the more affluent, organized, and religious voters next time.
The complete dismissal of the concerns of the Catholic church over reproductive “rights” (loosely used term as the actual facts should suggest otherwise) probably won’t play well long term with the large number of hispanic Catholics. Romney may not have inspired enough people, but a more charasmatic candidate would probably garner votes that sat home in protest of both candidates this last round.
The more people know about abortion, the less they favor it IMO. Again, Dems are overstepping their bounds with the support of that candidate in Texas. Her insane opposition to the late-term abortion legislation will paint Dems into a corner.
People will sour on the Obama model of politics, especially if the next Dem tries to follow that model. We will get tired of being angry with each other. His rhetoric has already lost most of the punch it had from 2008 and Hillary isn’t exactly a fresh face or “likable enough” anymore should she be the nominee.
Finally, the Democratic platform of big government is doomed to failure. It is basic math and economics and even the supposed solid Dem consituencies of the poor will be willing to try something else when they start to feel like wards of the state. It may take some time, but it will happen. The pendulum always swings.
The Megan McArdle audience, ladies and gentlemen.
