A Note On Titles

As far as I am aware, “Border Czar” is not an official title in the US government. “Aide to the President” is.
The series of “czar” titles seems to have started as a contemptuous way of describing people that Franklin Roosevelt appointed to overview particular portfolios. I recall it as semi-contemptuous from the Nixon administration.
But that’s what Donald Trump calls Tom Homan. He probably thinks it’s cool and intimidating. But it’s not an official title.
Trump has probably signed Homan on as an aide to the president. That way he doesn’t have to go through Senate confirmation, where embarrassing questions might be asked about $50,000 in a fast food bag.
Even the New York Times, in a headline this morning, titled Homan “Border Chief,” although the czar title has shown up in articles. “Presidential aide” is more accurate. Avoid using “Border Czar” and mock him for it.
For the more pedantically inclined, the more modern transliteration of the title is Tsar. Tsars were mostly nasty sadists or incompetent fools. Sometimes both.
