President Trump teased what he said will be “big news” during his primetime address set for Thursday, telling reporters the speech will be about voting machines and election integrity among other topics.
“It will concern that subject and we’ll have a couple of other things to say also,” Trump said Tuesday, when asked what Americans can expect to hear in the remarks.
“It’s really big news. It’s really, really big news, and our country has to shape up,” he continued. “What we’re going to talk about Thursday, it doesn’t get bigger because without free and fair elections, you don’t have a country.”
“We’ll be discussing other things too, but it’s going to be a very big announcement,” the president added.
Reports surfaced on Monday that Trump’s address will center around recently declassified intelligence on investigations into the country’s elections and what the administration is referring to as vulnerabilities in voting machines.
Trump has repeatedly voiced unfounded claims that there was widespread voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to former President Joe Biden.
He has been reupping his claims of voter fraud ahead of November, most recently in an effort to push Senate Republicans to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, which would require photo identification and proof of citizenship while registering to vote and when casting a ballot.
Additionally, last month the Postmaster General David Steiner confirmed the U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail-in ballots in states that refuse to provide sensitive voter data to the federal government, mirroring a proposed rule from the Trump administration. Though a recent Supreme Court decision ruled states can accept ballots post-Election Day.
