President Trump abruptly reversed course Tuesday when he announced the end of a plan to charge a 20% fee for commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, hours before the U.S. reimposed a blockade of Iranian ports.
Officials had been sent scrambling on Monday after Trump announced the policy. He said that the U.S. would become the “guardian” of the vital waterway through which about 20% of the world’s oil supplies pass. Iran has sought to stop tankers moving through a U.S.-designated route by firing on ships that hug Oman’s coast. U.S. Central Command has responded with three days of strikes on Iranian targets near the strait.
“Based on highly productive conversations with Middle East leadership, I have decided to replace the 20% United States Reimbursement Fee with Trade and Investment Deals that the various Gulf States will be making into the United States,” Trump said in a Truth Social post on Tuesday.
The larger issue here is that all this flailing around leaves us no close to the war ending at any point:

Efforts by Arab, Pakistani and other mediators to revive negotiations or restore a ceasefire have shown no public signs of progress, and the overall feeling in the Middle East and beyond is that the fighting will simply continue for now, according to two analysts and a person familiar with the situation.
The White House is “not really sure where this is headed,” said a former U.S. official in touch with Trump administration staffers, who, like others quoted in this story, was granted anonymity to describe sensitive conversations. “This could go on for some time. There’s no trust between Iran and the U.S., and that’s kind of the basis for any kind of diplomacy.”
The renewed fighting includes a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian shipping and Tehran launching multiple attacks on U.S. allies.
Strange, the Donald Trump Has Taken Over the Peace Lane people assured me that Trump would quickly end the war between Russia and Ukraine after Joe Biden simply refused to do so. I assume this happened, so I’m not sure why he’s not deploying the same diplomatic talents to end the war I they told me he would never start in the first place.
