Trump’s approval ratings not showing Bush bump
I would not be surprised to learn Crapigula’s attack on Iran was based on a simple calculation: Attack a country that begins with I + ????? = Biggest Ratings Ever. He’s obsessed with ratings and I assume he knows both Bushes experienced popularity surges after they attacked a country that began with I.
I think it is extremely unlikely that he understands context. At all. Including the narratives the Bushes created in response to current events. Gulf War: Big brave US and allies [must ignore the stuffy old UN to memory error] rescue Kuwait from Iraq. Iraq invasion: Valiant US, the victim of a dastardly terrorist attack and allies invade Iraq to stop its WMD program. Also, Iraq was somehow involved in the terrorist attack. But we have to attack right now or you want the terrorists to win.
Related: Here is Misperceptions, the Media and the Iraq War, from the Political Science Quarterly, Winter 2003-2004. It’s handy if you want a refresher on Bush II’s administration cynical manipulation of a public still recovering from the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks. Or you just want to see the outlets most associated with misinformation during that time.
Another bit of information useful to the ratings-hungry leader would be approval ratings before the attack. Neither HW’s ratings nor W’s ratings were as low before the Gulf War or the Iraq invasion.
Campos has covered voter opinion of the attacks on Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq (2003). One of these ratings is not like the others. As for what people think of the zombie-in-chief himself, the 38% approval rating in this Ipsos poll, conducted Feb 28 and today, shows that tRump should hold his breath for that Bush Boost.
