Going back to watching a classic I had not seen in many years, I decided to check out Wes Anderson’s 1998 hit Rushmore. I know people can be very divided on Anderson and while I enjoy all his films to at least some extent, I get that the extremeness of his twee can be more than a bit much. Here, it was all new and because he didn’t quite have the budgets he would soon have, a bit more under control because he doesn’t have the setpieces of his later films. It along with Lost in Translation completely remade Bill Murray’s career and of course he’s perfect here. I had forgotten that Brian Cox plays the school master. Jason Schwartzman’s character is annoying, but then he’s suppose to be, I think. The scene where Murray and Schwartzman keep one upping each other over their attraction to Olivia Williams that leads to Murray’s break lines being cut is pretty funny.

Anyway, always a good time to talk about Wes Anderson’s positives and problems, so let’s do that tonight.
