I can understand a feeling of creeping doom — I feel it myself often — but it is important to remember that Trump’s authoritarian moves are coming from a position of political weakness:

And the full consequences of Trump’s engineered price increases and decmination of healthcare haven’t even been felt yet.

And Trump himself remains objectively unpopular, at least if the baseline is “other presidents at the same point in their tenure” rather than “how unpopular you personally think Donald Trump should be:”

I will grant that the news here is not as unambiguously bad for Trump — his cult of personality gives him a stubborn floor in the way Biden did not. But there’s still a reason that Republicans are consistently getting wiped out in special elections and are desperately trying to save as many House seats as they can by turning the Rucho dial to 11.
