Once again we see the fruits of American elites taking Trump neither seriously nor literally:
"this worse than the worst-case scenario" might be the perfect encapsulation of the failure of imagination America's leading institutions have brought to their assessment of Donald Trump for the last decade.

One of the biggest willful delusions about Trump that has been very beneficial to his total takeover of the Republican Party is the erroneous idea that he doesn’t really believe in anything, including the ideas he’s had since long before he entered politics. And alas it’s not elites who will pay most of the price for their negligence.
