Krugman leaves the NYT
And moving on to Substack or some other gig, apparently:
Nonetheless, I decided to leave in search of more freedom in terms of both style and content. And that’s all I’m going to say for now. For people who weren’t there, it’s hard to describe how cowed the mainstream press was by George W. Bush, especially after 9/11. However obviously true arguments like “it was Bush, not Gore, who was lying at the debate” and “the Iraq War is a very dumb idea” were, they were almost never expressed in big-name op-ed columns at the time. The Times essentially stumbled into this by accident — he was hired to be a neoliberal economics commentator — but he was a really bracing voice then and never stopped being good. I’m looking forward to where he ends up next.
