The free ride when you’ve already paid for the American electorate is that 1)inflation (particularly with respect to food prices) and immigration were clearly the two most important issues for marginal voters; 2)Trump’s immigration policies would have the result of increasing food prices; and 3)on top of that Trump is proposing tarrifs and tax cuts that would both be inflationary.
And now that the election is over, Trump is free to tell his voters that you can’t always get what you want:
Trump in October: “This will rapidly drive prices down […] It'll also bring your grocery bill way down.” Trump now: "It's hard to bring things down once they're up. You know, it's very hard."

Before 2016, one could be reasonably confident that objectively bad performance on inflation would have a very adverse effect on the incumbent party. In 2025 with a Republican president…we’re about to test the limits of voters viewing the economy through the lens of their partisan preferences.
