Crying won’t help you, praying won’t do you no good
Looks like there’s a lot of catastrophic flooding throughout the enormous area affected by Helene:
There are reports of various dams failing or at imminent risk of failing.
A friend who is in the insurance business points out that Americans are radically underinsured as far as potential flood damage goes:
Flood insurance is extremely limited.
Limited in the sense that:
1) you can only obtain it if you live in a flood plain
2) it’s extremely expensive
3) it generally has a very high deductible ($5-10k or more)
4) it pays out at actual cash value… so not only do you have your deductible out of pocket – you also take the depreciation hit out of pocket as well
TLDR: this is going to be horrible in life changing ways for a LOT of people.
Meanwhile, I know that Twitter, like birds, isn’t real, but the replies to this are a small glimpse into just how much crazy is out there (a lot):
