Macron is sticking to his story:

Follow the thread for more. There are domestic implications; Macron seems to be baiting Le Pen to pursue a pro-Putin policy, which apparently is more of a political liability in France than it is in the United States. Still, these things start with conversations like this. At some point it could become worthwhile to do an evaluation of what exactly France could bring to the fight; the biggest immediate shift would be in the air war. It seems to me extremely likely that if France became involved, even without the blessing of NATO, Poland at least would also join in direct fashion. But even contemplating that puts us into the very uncomfortable position of thinking about a pair of nuclear powers trading conventional blows. For the time being, the most notable effect may be giving Russia some pause about pursuing any breakthroughs that might develop along the front.
