Save A Cyclist!
The British Automobile Association has taken a Dutch idea that would work in the US too! It doesn’t matter which side of the road you park on!
Cyclists sustain major injuries and are sometimes killed when someone opens a car door as they are going by. The narrow streets of Santa Fe also make such random door-opening dangerous to passing cars, although usually with less human damage.
The AA has a simple solution. They call it the Dutch Reach.
If you’re on the road side of the car, use your hand that is furthest from the door handle to open the door. This will force you to look back to see approaching cars, cyclists, or pedestrians. If you do it frequently enough, it will become a habit.
